About Me

Hi, my name is Thomas and I'm the man behind this website.

I first came across the ideas of Deep Ecology in Daniel Quinn's novel Ishmael. I subsequently read the rest of his books and eventually found my way to the writings of similar thinkers such as Thom Hartmann, Arne Naess and Henry David Thoreau.

Every person who writes in this field approaches things from a different angle. That is in fact the beauty of it. Each individual can enjoy their own philosophy and spirituality whilst sharing the common belief that the world exists for all creation, not just for man.

Why Deep Ecology?

There was no word or phrase that I knew of that neatly summed up these ideas and philosophies. It was a man I know called David, a energy healer living self-sufficiently in a cob house, who told me of the term Deep Ecology.

It doesn't sit perfectly with me. Sometimes I think it is too narrow, sometimes too broad. There is an inherent problem in labelling something in that you pick up all the baggage already associated with the term.

What I would like to explicitly disassociate myself from are those who use their ecological beliefs to engage in unlawful and violent behaviour. This philosophy to me is peaceful and non-violent. The only thing I advocate is that people change their way of thinking.
