Books
Ishmael by Daniel Quinn
This is the groundbreaking title that spawned a series of books that have changed the lives of those who have read them. This novel was awarded $500,000; the highest prize ever given to a work of fiction. This book unearthed my dormant interest in Deep Ecology. It has a cult following worldwide and will without fail change your world.
The Story of B by Daniel Quinn
Daniel Quinn's second novel after Ishmael. This book follows on where Ishmael left off and explores the more nitty-gritty fundamental theories that Ishmael didn't go into depth with. Solidifies and adds to the knowledge of the first book.
My Ishmael by Daniel Quinn
The gorilla is back and this time he has a new student. Using the ideas from his first two books Daniel Quinn explores some of the pressing social concerns of the present age. He traces their causes back to the point where our culture abandoned a way of life that worked and adopted something more stressful, more time consuming and less fulfilling.
Beyond Civilization by Daniel Quinn
This book was written as a result of the numerous "now what?" questions Quinn had been faced with in response to his other books. He acknowledges that he does not possess all the answers however he does explore examples of how people might go about implementing change. The focus here is how to make a living in today's business world with a tribal rather than hierarchichal structure.
Making a Living While Making a Difference by Melissa Everett
We are imprisoned in our culture by the need to make a living. Many of us hold jobs only because we know no other way. This book is a great step towards making a living in a conscious and deliberate way; in a manner where you decide the terms and at the same time do something positive in the world.
Films
Home - This feature length film vividly documents the environmental destruction that is taking place on our planet. Unfortunately this film falls victim to the Great Forgetting. It does not make the distinction between taker and leaver cultures and places the blame for the destruction on "humanity." The film tacitly suggests that we humans change our ways so our great civilization can continue, rather than seeking to move beyond civilization. Nevertheless this film holds value in its portrayl of destruction and its example of Mother Culture's myths.
The Human Zoo - This film documents the strange zoo-like lifestyle that is experienced by humans that live in civilization. This film is also under the influence of the Great Forgetting. However it nevertheless provides some insight into the abnormal social structures many of us now live in.
First Earth - Uncompromising Ecological Architecture - This is a film about sustainable architecture but also so much more. This is about communities coming together and taking control of their own living. It's about creating a cultural space where people can be free. Here people are going beyond civilization and reclaiming something that most human communities have lost. With contributions from Daniel Quinn.
Money As Debt - Money As Debt documents one of the great tragedies of a taker society. The masters as the top of the hierarchy wield control over the population via the money supply. As if it wasn't bad enough that we are enslaved in a taker world we have to pay tax and interest for the privilege of our existence.
The Ancient Mayan Civilization - An excellent documentary on the mysterious Maya. They can't teach us how to prolong civilization, but they can teach us to abandon civilization if it isn't working.
Video Clips
Tribes of Europe - John Trudell talks about the fact that everybody on this planet is descended from a tribe; everybody has it encoded on their DNA. Even the white man, so often blamed for the world's misery, used to live in tribes. The problem is that it was so long ago that they have forgotten.
Globalisation Impact - Daniel Quinn - Daniel Quinn explains that saving the world isn't the motivation; it's about getting something better for people. And then people won't be so keen on devouring the world.
Native American Prophecy - Native American elders talk about the changes going on in the world. It's not the end that's coming, it is a transition phase, it is evolution. We are existing outside of natural law and if we are to survive we must acknowledge these laws.
Facts of World Hunger - Daniel Quinn - Quinn explains the difference between agriculture and totalitarian agriculture. Totalitarian agriculture is the cause of world hunger. "We aren't growing more food to feed the starving, we are growing more food to grow more people."
Clip From "What A Way To Go" - A clip from the film that is essentially a documentary version of the book Ishmael by Daniel Quinn, looking at the end of our civilization.
Civilization - Some Restrictions Apply - A humorous clip taking the piss out of the benefits of civilization.
The Psychosis of Civilization - Richard Manning talks about the psychosis of civilization. Our disconnection from the rest of the natural world has made us crazy and psychotic.
Articles
The Worst Mistake In the History of the Human Race - Jared Diamond debunks the myth that the Agricultural Revolution led to an increased quality of life. His article argues that it led to harder work, poorer health and a less pleasant existence.
Toward a Deep Christian Ecology - Stanley P. Saunders' article rethinks the foundations of a faith many blame for the environmental crisis. He suggests that a different reading of the Christian story aligns with a deep ecological worldview.
Creation in Community - Faith and the Environment - This article unpacks the creation story in Genesis and gives it a fresh approach. In this reading God does not hand humans complete control of the Earth. Rather he places us as co-creators in a dynamic environment of which we are an integral part of.
The Lost People - Thom Hartmann, author of The Last Hours of Ancient Sunlight comments on the loss of indigenous culture amongst Europeans. They destroy the world not because they are callous and cold but because they have lost their roots. They have forgotten how to live.
Interviews
Satish Kumar explains Deep Ecology - This is an effective and conscise description of the ideas of Deep Ecology. Non-human creation has a right to life not because of its use to humans but because of its own intrinsic value.
Daniel Quinn interviewed for University Magazine - Quinn talks about his book Ishmael, his experience as a educational publisher and his amazement at the success of the novel.
Dr Stephan Harding on Gaia Theory and Deep Ecology - Harding talks in great detail about the state of the planet, James Lovelock's gaia hypothesis (that the Earth is a living system) and Deep Ecology.
Where We Went Wrong - Daniel Quinn - A summary of the main ideas in Ishmael. Our cultural prejudice against tribal people, the inherent structural flaw in our civilization and the danger that humankind might eliminate itself.
Journals
